Robert Gardelle
Robert Gardelle is an artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at National Museum of Art of Romania.
Eighteenth-century printmaker Robert Gardelle turned his eye to portrait engravings, often of figures in silk coats and lace cravats. One of his preserved prints shows the elderly Emanuel Duplessis in three-quarter view, a fur-lined robe draped over his shoulder and a quill tucked into his hand. The linework stays crisp even after two hundred years, letting you trace each thread of his coat.
See if you can spot the tiny inkwell tucked in the lower corner, it’s the same one he used for every plate. Next, tap the portrait to zoom in on Duplessis’s lace.
