Oscar Obedeanu spent his life painting the people who shaped Romania’s past, kings, bishops, generals, all with the same steady gaze. He liked to give their portraits a little glow, like a lamp turned up just enough to see their faces but not the cracks in the paint. If you want to see how he did it, look up his 1891 painting Glorificarea Olteniei; it’s where he turned a whole region into a stage lit by golden light.
