James M. Sommerville (1825-1899) was an American physician, naturalist, and artist based in Philadelphia. A member of the Academy of Natural Sciences and a trustee of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, he brought the precision of scientific observation to his painting. He is best known for the watercolor Ocean Life, a detailed study of marine creatures now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Working with the Pennsylvania Academy professor Christian Schussele, he collected specimens, wrote accompanying text, and produced one of the earliest American submarine illustrations made for lithographic reproduction, published in a Philadelphia pamphlet in 1859.
