Walter Colls

Walter Colls is an artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at Victoria and Albert Museum.

Walter Colls carved his living sculpting shop signs in 19th-century London’s Fleet Street alleys, where the smell of hot metal and printer’s ink clung to his coat sleeves. He turned Nell Gwyn, the actress and royal mistress, into a print that looks like it was sketched on the spur of the moment, every lace curl and saucy smirk leaping off the page. Find Nell Gwyn in Gallery Tiles and you’ll see why Colls’s quick, bold lines feel like gossip you overheard in a coffeehouse.
