Romania
George Löwendal is a Romania artist. 3 works are cataloged here, principally at National Museum of Romanian History.
George Löwendal kept a studio above a Bucharest print shop, where he’d sketch on napkins between coffee and cigarettes. The 1950s found him stitching thick woolen panels of Romanian villages—clay roofs, wooden wells—straight onto burlap, no paint, just thread and patience. A friend once told me Löwendal’s textile “Bordei din Drăghiceni” looks like a barn you could step inside if the fabric ever gave way; it hangs in the Village Museum now.
