Alf Dunn

Alf Dunn’s studio smelled like turpentine and old motor oil because he salvaged gears from broken lawnmowers to make his kinetic sculptures spin. He’d bolt the parts onto wood panels, add a dab of house paint, and step back to watch the whole thing wobble and whir. That 1975 poster you’ll see in the app is basically a frozen-in-time photograph of one of those spinning sculptures, its bright red arms blurred like a kid’s drawing.
