Artist
Pyar Chand
Pyar Chand is a Romanticism artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at Victoria and Albert Museum.
Pyar Chand kept himself to himself in 19th-century Delhi, turning paint into quiet company after his wife died young. He painted portraits that felt alive because he left the edges rough and the colors a little raw. Look at the 1847 portrait of Padam Singh, you can almost feel the Delhi heat pressing against the sitter’s silk.
Gallery Tiles puts him in because his rough-cut figures show a side of Company School art you won’t find in the polished catalogs.
