Jean de Wayembourg was a painter active in Nancy between about 1592 and 1603. His name suggests Flemish origins, later Frenchified, though little is documented of his early life. He served as official portraitist to Charles III, Duke of Lorraine, holding the post of the duke's ordinary painter from 1592 until his death in 1603 and receiving a substantial annual salary.
His output consisted chiefly of canvas portraits, mostly life-size, including sets of dynastic likenesses of the duke and his children. Long overlooked, his work has been reconstructed through archival research that has identified princely portraits of his hand in several European collections.
