T. Fragley kept a pet owl in his attic studio in Norwich, where he painted by candlelight and swore it judged his brushwork. The owl appears in the corner of Judge Gwynne, a 1705 courtroom scene where the judge’s wig looks just a bit too neat for the chaos on his desk. See if you can spot the bird, it’s the detail that makes the painting feel alive.
