Johns

Johns is an artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at Rijksmuseum.

This artist turned everyday objects like flags and targets into art before Pop Art even had a name. They rendered flat emblems on stiff parchment so the paint sat on top like skin rather than sinking into canvas. In the piece on your screen, the star-spangled field is built from waxy pigment pushed through a stencil, leaving the cloth’s grain visible at the edges.

Flip next to the flag itself, painted in 1955, to see how the same motif gains weight when scaled up.
