Artist
J. Langton Barnard
J. Langton Barnard is an American Folk Art artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at National Library of Wales.
J. Langton Barnard made small, detailed portraits on ivory in the 1800s. In 1856 they painted a man in a black coat, the fine brushstrokes showing his collar and cuffs with care. These miniatures were keepsakes, meant to fit inside lockets or boxes.
Trace the lace edge of the collar and you can almost feel the stiff fabric. Look at the next portrait titled Portrait of a Gentleman in a Black Coat to see the same quiet realism.
