Portrait of Francois M. Guyol de Guiran

Francois M. Guyol de Guiran is a Romanticism painter. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Francois M. Guyol de Guiran was a French-born miniaturist who worked in the United States in the early nineteenth century, when demand for small painted likenesses was strong. Records place him in St. Louis and later in New Orleans during the 1810s and 1820s. He is known essentially from a single signed work, Portrait of a Gentleman and His Daughter, now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The small picture is unusual in its construction, with the figures painted on ivory and the surrounding foliage on paper.
