French painter of the early 1500s, Pierre Des Mares the Elder made two surviving works you’ll find here. See how he painted Beheading of Saint Catherine and Saint Catherine Refuses Idolatry in the same year: both show stiff figures and gold leaf against vivid reds and blues, the way many artists did before the Renaissance took hold. His figures look more like flat cutouts than real people, look close at the folds in the saint’s robe to spot that.
