William P Robins

William P Robins kept a tiny studio in Saffron Walden where the light slanted just right around midday. He painted the town’s castle ruins over and over, not grand views but the left-behind things, broken walls, a single wooden post, the shadow of a pillory that once locked thieves’ ankles. His watercolours let the paper stay pale where the stone crumbled, so the ruins feel alive and brittle at once.

If you walk the castle’s outer path and look up at the tower’s stub, you’ll see what he saw.
