Artist

Johann Carl Zierl

Johann Carl Zierl is a Rococo painting artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at Bavarian State Painting Collections.

Johann Carl Zierl kept a tiny wooden box of colored glass pebbles in his coat pocket, pulling them out whenever the light hit just right to sketch their glow on scraps of receipts. That habit shows up in his few surviving paintings, each bead of light treated like a living thing. Look up his Still Life with Glass Pebbles and Candle (c. 1750) and you’ll see why 18th-century Munich taverns still hang reproductions near the wine racks.
