English architect and designer Owen Jones spent the 1830s in Egypt and later sketched its temples in crisp watercolours. You can see his 1832 view of Thebes’ Great Temple at Karnak and the lofty columns inside Dendera’s hypostyle hall, both done on the spot. Look for his 1853 drawing of an Egyptian temple gateway, bright ink lines on pale paper.
