This early 20th-century painter created dense, earth-toned still lifes and figure scenes in oil. In 1913 he rendered a quiet corner in Still Life with Fruit and Bottle, stacking apples and a glass jar against a shadowed wall. Flip to the same year’s Peasant at Rest to see a worker’s worn hands folded over a table edge, the light catching the rough fabric of his shirt.
