Artist
Jane Stanhope
Jane Stanhope is a Biedermeier artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at Victoria and Albert Museum.
Jane Stanhope painted scenes of the Middle East in the late 1700s, when British artists brought back watercolours of foreign places. In 1798 she recorded a camel market outside Cairo called Abu-Kier, showing robes, harnesses, and dust under a bright sky. Her brush laid down the small details, tassels on a halter, the curve of a teapot, so the scene feels close enough to reach. Walk next to Abu-Kier, a sheet of paper that carries you to Cairo two centuries ago.
