William Notman
William Notman is an artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at Victoria and Albert Museum.
William Notman ran a photography studio in Montreal so busy it had its own house organ, a monthly bulletin of customers’ portraits, proof he treated clients like regulars at a diner. He posed them next to fake winter scenes even in summer, because Montreal winters felt too short already. Glance at the Guy Little file and you’ll see the proof: a stage actor mid-monologue, beard a storm cloud, feet planted on a painted floor that tilts like a ship. Notman’s trick was to make real life look like a postcard you’d actually mail.
