This guy painted himself staring right back at you in 1697, all puffy lace collar and steady eyes. He’s not some famous name; he was a Nuremberg goldsmith who picked up a brush to record his own face the way he’d sketch a fancy spoon handle, sharp, no-nonsense, and done in one sitting. Look him up in “Autoportret Johann Peter Feuerlein,” the same year Handel was born and coffeehouses were popping up on every corner.
