British watercolours in the late 1700s often turned castles and coasts into quiet records of place. Barrow painted Carisbrooke Castle in 1796 on paper with pigments and gum arabic, its round towers rising over the River Medina on the Isle of Wight. The sheet shows a clear sky, warm stone, and a single figure dwarfed by the fortress walls.
