Popa Sandu

Popa Sandu is a Byzantine icon painting artist. 2 works are cataloged here, principally at Alba Iulia Orthodox Archdiocese.

Popa Sandu made religious paintings in early 1800s Romania. His two known works here show crowned Mary receiving a blue halo in Încoronarea Fecioarei and a calm Virgin holding the Christ child in Maica Domnului cu Pruncul, both from 1833. Look for the soft gold leaf and the way the halos float just above their heads.

Next, tap into Maica Domnului cu Pruncul to see how the folds of her robe catch the light.
