Artist

Gopal

Gopal is an Impressionism artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at Victoria and Albert Museum.

Gopal didn’t just paint portraits, he seemed to know his sitters inside out before picking up a brush. His 1874 Portrait of Thakur Bhoj Raj Singh catches a Rajput nobleman mid-conversation, the whites of his eyes catching the light like he’s about to speak. The way he holds the book, half-open as if he just paused to listen, makes you wonder what the Thakur was about to say.

If you’ve ever stood in front of a painting and felt like the person could step out, this is where it starts, find that portrait in the gallery and test it yourself.
