Charles Backofen loved painting faces so much he moved to Philadelphia in the 1840s just to be near enough clients who’d sit still. He kept a tiny brush in his waistcoat pocket and would touch up a sitter’s collar or cuff between sittings, turning studio corners into impromptu barbershops. Why he never left: he could charge extra for that quick collar lift.
Track him down through Mrs. Joseph Kelly’s direct stare, she’s the gallery’s front door, oil on canvas, 1850, still hanging in the same frame.
