Master of the Codex Rossiano

Master of the Codex Rossiano is the conventional name art historians give to an anonymous Italian illuminator active in the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries. The name derives from a manuscript, the Codex Rossiano, now in the Rossiana collection of the Vatican Library. He worked in the Sienese tradition, roughly between about 1380 and 1400, and specialized in manuscript illumination, painting historiated initials and miniatures in liturgical and devotional books.

His hand has been identified in numerous cuttings and leaves that are now dispersed among museum collections. As with other notname masters, his real identity remains unknown, and he is defined entirely by the stylistic consistency of the works grouped under his name.
