Master of the Heisterbach Altar is the conventional name for an anonymous German painter active in and around Cologne roughly between 1440 and 1460. The name comes from a large altarpiece made about 1445 for the Cistercian monastery of Heisterbach, a polyptych whose many panels illustrated scenes from the Life of Christ. The altarpiece was later dismantled and its panels dispersed, with surviving elements held in collections including the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum in Cologne and the Alte Pinakothek in Munich.
The painter's work reflects the influence of Stefan Lochner, following his compositions and soft tonal handling in the manner of the Cologne school.
