Untitled is a 1980 tempera by Bill Jensen, held at Museum of Modern Art.
This painting looks messy on purpose. Sharp black and white shapes fight for space, like torn paper. A blue oval sits in the middle, soft and fuzzy, as if someone smudged it with a wet finger. The rough edges and mixed colors make it feel raw. The artist used old-school tempera paint—egg yolk mixed with color—along with pastels and charcoal. Check out Bill Jensen to see more of his work.
