This etching shows a busy Italian town square packed with tiny figures. A tower leans in the background and shadows stretch long across the cobblestones. Callot used a sharp needle and acid to carve this scene on metal. His drypoint lines dig deep, making the shadows look extra dark and dramatic. Look for prints by Rembrandt next. He also used drypoint this way.
