St. Philip and James the Less, Apostles; St. Anthanasius; The Invention of the Cross; St. Pelagia is a 1634 ink by Jacques Callot, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This print shows four small scenes inside oval frames. Each picture has a person or group dressed in old-fashioned robes, standing or riding animals. The figures hold staffs or cross-like objects, and some have halos. Backgrounds include buildings, crowds, and a few animals. One odd detail: the figures in the top-left and bottom-right scenes ride donkeys, but the one in the top-right rides a horse. The artist used sharp lines and shading to create depth. Next, look up etching to see how this technique works.
Jacques Callot was a baroque printmaker and draftsman from the Duchy of Lorraine.
