St. Urban; The Translation of St. Mary of James; St. Quadrat; St. Julius is a 1634 ink by Jacques Callot, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sheet holds four small, oval scenes carved into the paper. The top left shows a robed man with his arms out, flanked by two figures—one holding a spear, the other a bucket. The top right has a group gathered outside a simple building, with a horse and a dog nearby. The bottom left features a lone figure in flowing robes, standing on a rocky shore. The bottom right shows two men in armor talking to a robed figure, with a third man watching. These images are drawn with fine, scratchy lines, giving them a rough, textured look. The artist used shading to add depth, making the figures stand out against the plain background. Next, check out how this was made using etching.
Jacques Callot was a baroque printmaker and draftsman from the Duchy of Lorraine.
