The Cavalry Combat with Pistols is a 1633 ink by Jacques Callot, a Baroque work, depicting Battle, held at National Gallery of Art.
This etching shows soldiers on horseback firing pistols in a chaotic battle scene. The soldiers wear wide-brimmed hats and long coats. Smoke and dust fill the air around them. Callot made this print by scratching lines into metal. Then he inked it and pressed paper onto the plate. This technique lets him print many copies from one plate. Look up Callot, Jacques if you want to see more of his bold battle scenes.
Jacques Callot was a baroque printmaker and draftsman from the Duchy of Lorraine.
