About this work

This etching shows a mangrove snapper fish floating in water, its greenish body and red fins sharp against a pale background. The artist added hand coloring after printing, making the colors pop. Catesby studied live fish in the wild before drawing them, so the details feel real, not made up. Hand coloring like this was tricky back then—each print got touched up by hand. That means no two prints look exactly alike. Check out more by Catesby, Mark.
