Cartouche is a 1646 ink by François Collignon, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This drawing shows two fancy scrolls with swirls and leaves. At the top, a cloudy shape looks like it’s holding up a crown. Below, two big loops frame smaller designs—one has a face peeking out, the other looks like a bird or a mask. The whole thing is drawn in black lines on light paper. The artist signed it "F. Collignon fecit," which means he made it. This style was used for decorations on buildings or furniture back then. Want to see more like this?
