This black-and-white scene is packed with chaos. Soldiers on horseback and foot clash in the middle, swords swinging, shields raised. Some men are falling, others are charging forward, and a few bodies lie scattered on the ground. The horses rear up, adding to the frenzy, while a few figures in the background seem to be fleeing or watching. Notice how the artist used fine lines to build up dark areas—this isn’t paint, it’s etched into metal. The texture of armor and fabric comes from tiny crisscrossed lines, almost like a sketch turned into a print. Want to see more like this? Check out technique: engraving.
