About this work

This is a print by Marco Dente from around 1520. It shows a column in the middle of the page. The print is later than others in the collection because the plate wore down over time. You can see extra lines were added to parts like the censer top. Check out prints by Marcantonio Raimondi next if you like this style.

The story of this work

Overview

This engraving by Marco Dente depicts a perfume burner adorned with caryatids, a design created for King Francis I of France around 1515–20. The print is a reverse copy of an engraving by Marcantonio Raimondi and a later impression of an earlier work by Dente, distinguished by the addition of the monogram "SR." Evidence of plate wear and reworked lines, such as the strengthened fleur-de-lys decoration, indicates the plate’s prolonged use. The composition differs from Raimondi’s versions, which include additional decorative elements like festoon leaves and vertical background lines.
