One of 16 drawings and tracings of Saracenic pavements, ornament, lattices etc in Cairo is a 1823 by Frank Dillon, a Romanticism work, held at Victoria and Albert Museum.
This drawing shows a repeating pattern of shapes. Triangles, stars, and lines fill the whole page in a grid. The lines are drawn in brown ink on a light background. Some shapes look like they could be folded or stacked. This was made to copy designs from Cairo’s buildings. The artist focused on how light and shadow play on these patterns. Look up cross-hatching next to see how artists build up dark and light with lines.
These drawings and tracings by Frank Dillon depict Saracenic architectural elements in Cairo, including pavements, ornamentation, and lattice designs. The collection consists of 16 works, numbered E.2880 to E.2895 in the 1909 accession records.
