Cardinal Arnaud d'Ossat is a 1681 by Gerard Edelinck, a Baroque work, depicting Ferrara, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This is a black-and-white portrait of an older man with a serious expression. He’s wearing a tall, pointed hat and a robe with buttons down the front. Around his neck hangs a chain with a small round emblem that looks like a coat of arms. The name at the bottom reads *Le Cardinal d’Ossat*, so this is a portrait of a cardinal. The artist used shading to make his face stand out against the dark background. Want to see more? Look up chiaroscuro to learn how artists like this one used light and shadow.
