The Sudarium is a 1480 by German 15th Century, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This looks like a faded, brownish print with dark, smudgy shapes. The image is blurry and hard to make out, but it seems to show a cloth with some kind of pattern or marks on it. The edges are worn, and the paper looks old and yellowed. This is called a *paste print*, a type of early printed image made by pressing inked woodblocks onto paper. The dark spots might be intentional, or they could be damage over time. Check out the technique: chiaroscuro next to see how artists used light and shadow in the Renaissance.
This 15th-century German artist carved vivid religious scenes into metal and wood, then hand-painted them in bright, symbolic colors.
