About this work

This is a black-and-white photo of a carved stone shrine inside a church. The top has pointed arches like tiny windows, and the bottom shows six tall figures in robes, each holding something. The figures stand in shallow niches, and the whole thing looks worn but detailed. The photo was taken in 1896 as part of a survey of old buildings. The figures might be saints or biblical characters, but their faces are smooth and simple. Check out the Victoria and Albert Museum to see more photos like this.
