The Beggars: The Two Pilgrims is a 1623 by Jacques Callot, a Baroque work, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This etching shows two men in heavy robes and hats, leaning on long walking sticks. The one on the left looks tired, his mouth open like he’s about to speak. The other holds a staff and a bag slung over his shoulder, looking serious. Behind them, a small town with buildings and people is drawn faintly. Notice how the artist used dark lines and shading to make the figures stand out against the lighter background. This makes their clothes and faces look almost three-dimensional. Next, check out chiaroscuro to see how this technique works in other art.
Jacques Callot was a baroque printmaker and draftsman from the Duchy of Lorraine.
