This painting shows a man in a dark coat and white lace collar. His face is lit from the side. His eyes look right at you. The style is called "chiaroscuro." That means strong light and dark contrast to show shape and feeling. Big portraits like this were popular in the 1600s. This artist worked a lot like Godfrey Kneller.
