The Rialto
1926
ink
From the collection of National Gallery of Art
The Rialto is a 1926 ink by Donald Shaw MacLaughlan, depicting Grand Canal, held at National Gallery of Art.
This etching shows Venice’s Rialto Bridge at night. The bridge arches over a quiet canal. Soft light glows from its arches. A few boats rest below. The artist used drypoint here. He scratched lines into a metal plate. Ink sits in those scratches, making the image. The night scene feels calm and still. Try an etching by Rembrandt for another drypoint example.
