About this work

This sketch shows a busy bridge over a canal in Venice. People walk along the bridge, and boats float below. Buildings line both sides, packed with windows and balconies. The water is choppy, and the whole scene looks lively but drawn in quick, sketchy lines. Notice how the artist captures light and shadow to make the scene feel three-dimensional. The dark shapes of the boats and bridge stand out against the lighter water and sky. Look up Frank Duveneck to see how his style blends realism with loose, expressive lines.
