About this work

In the painting a Breton woman stands by a wash basin, holding a wooden brush and a striped towel. The scene shows everyday work in a coastal village, a glimpse of life before modern laundry machines. The artist uses thick paint, called impasto, to give texture to the cloth and water. She wears a simple dress with a blue apron, typical of the region. You can see more of this style at the Museum of Ethnography. The museum also holds other folk paintings from Brittany.
