The work originated in the collection of Richard Waddington (1838–1913) and subsequently passed to his descendants. It remained in private hands until appearing at auction at Beaussant Lefèvre in Paris on December 11, 2009, as lot number 195.
Following the sale, the painting was acquired by the Parisian dealer Haboldt & Co., from whom the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., purchased the work in 2012. It has remained in the permanent collection since, under accession number 2012.11.1.
