About this work

Nadar took this photo around 1876. It shows Victor Capoul dressed for his role in *Paul et Virginie*. A small detail: the photo was printed on card, like a postcard. Back then, photos like this were huge news. Actors posed for fans in costume. These prints were called “cartes de visite.” They were tiny—about the size of a calling card. Check out Nadar next.

The story of this work

Overview

Nadar’s 1876 photograph shows Victor Capoul in the role of Paul from the production *Paul et Virginie*. Produced as an albumen print from a glass negative, the image was originally mounted on a carte de visite card bearing Nadar’s studio imprint. The photograph is part of a larger collection of theatrical cartes de visite and cabinet cards assembled by Guy Tristram Little and later donated to the Victoria and Albert Museum.
