About this work

You see bright, jagged shapes—reds, blues, yellows—floating like puzzle pieces against a white background. No people, no trees, just color and form. Freundlich painted this in 1924, after years of working alongside Picasso and Braque in Paris. He was one of the first German artists to drop realism completely, building pictures from pure color and line. The shapes feel like they could move, even though they’re flat on the canvas. If you like this, look up the work of Otto Freundlich (German, 1878–1943)—his pastels are quieter but just as bold.
