Interior of St. Mark's, Venice is a 1892 by Otto Henry Bacher, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This sketch shows a dimly lit church interior. Tall, ornate columns line the space, their tops carved with swirls and leaves. A balcony with a railing runs along the back wall, and a small scene of people is painted above it. Light streams in from the left, casting long shadows and highlighting the texture of the stone and wood. The artist focused on the play of light and dark to make the space feel deep and mysterious. The drawing looks like it was made from life, capturing the way real buildings look in shadow. Check out chiaroscuro to see how artists use light and dark to create drama.
