This ink drawing shows a crowded sea battle with twisting ships and billowing smoke. The artist uses only black and white to make every line count. You feel the heat and chaos of 1571 when Christian and Ottoman fleets clashed at Lepanto. Pierrakos spent years on 38 drawings, each one a tight study of motion and light. The lack of color forces your eye to focus on the clash of oars, sails, and rigging. Want to see more like this? Look up Pierrakos, Alkis (1920-2017).
