A young deer kneels on the ground, head turned slightly, body relaxed but alert. The lines are sharp and close together, showing fur and form with careful marks. This drypoint was made around 1915 by German artist Renée Sintenis, who often drew animals with quiet strength. She carved the image into a metal plate, then inked it to make the print. Few artists at the time focused so closely on animals as a main subject. You can see this work in person at The Museum of Modern Art.
